All About Oats

I swear by oats to maintain one's gastrointestinal health and levels of low density lipo-proteins (also known as 'bad cholesterol') in blood.

Why? It's not just due to research I've read online, but an anecdotal story involving my own dad. My father has been suffering from hypertension and hyperlipidemia for over a decade. For a while, he consistently ate a 250ml bowl of oats every morning for several months. His lipid levels fell to the point that his doctor recommended to stop the medication for hyperlipidemia. This was good news! Prolonged ingestion of medication can lead to other drug induced side effects. For example, usage of statins has been linked to muscle weakness. All drugs comes with pros and cons of course, and this including herbs, food etc; anything we ingest. Between food and drugs, it's logical if the former is your medicine instead.

The good news did not last. My father celebrated his new health by deserting oats and enjoying the usual fare from coffee shops. It wasn't like he binged on them and chose only the greasy stuff, but he certainly stopped the oats regime. On his next check up in less than six months, he was returned to his regime of cholesterol medication.

Hence, I believe in having oats regularly. It's not just for adults, mind you. Do you know that babies in Sweden have oatmeal and mashed vegetables as their first food? This might well unusual in Asia here, especially if one came from a Chinese family, but it's real and oats are for babies too!

Within this section, I shall devote recipes about oats cooked in many different ways. I hope that you will find more interesting ideas of your own after reading them!
